The Mythic Circle
A literary magazine publishing original short fiction, poetry, and artwork

Submissions guidelines
Order current, upcoming, or previous issues

The Mythic Circle is a small literary magazine published annually by the Mythopoeic Society which celebrates the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams. These adventuresome writers saw themselves as contributors to a rich imaginative tradition encompassing authors as different as Homer and H.G. Wells. We invite you to join us on this creative journey!

The Mythic Circle exists primarily for the benefit of writers trying to develop their craft in the Mythopoeic tradition. It publishes short fiction, poetry, and artwork. We seek contributions of fantasy- or mythic-inspired original stories, poems, and independent works of visual art. We are also looking for artists interested in creating text-dependent illustrations for poems and stories. See our submissions page for further details.

History of The Mythic Circle

Founded in 1987 by Sherwood Smith and Lynn Maudlin, The Mythic Circle started as a quarterly ’zine designed to function as a writers’ workshop in print and featured a very active letters column. After several years the enthusiastic submissions of aspiring writers and the challenge of publishing on a quarterly schedule took their toll, and the ’zine finally became an annual publication. Gwenyth E. Hood edited The Mythic Circle for many years, up through 2019. In 2020, Victoria Gaydosik took over as editor, recruiting Nolan Meditz to be poetry editor.
